The Story:

1994 - 1995 - In The Beginning

In early 1994, Heart Management ran an add in UK entertainment paper "The Stage" looking for girls to audition for an all girl pop band.

Victoria Adams, Melanie Chisholm & Melanie Brown attended that audition and got through to the next round. Geri Halliwell, after missing the first rounds of auditions, rang the team and asked to join the auditions - which where down to the final few at this point. After several rounds of auditions, the final five - Geri, Victoria, Melanie C, Melanie B and Michelle Stephenson moved into a house in Maidenhead and began rehearsing and vocal coaching.

After a short time, Michelle left the band for personal reasons [her mother was ill and she wanted to continue her studies] so the girls vocal coach Pepi Lemur suggested one of her pupils, Emma Bunton. Emma auditioned and was accepted into the band. She moved into Maidenhead and fit in perfectly. The girls were tentatively named "Touch" and continued their rehearsals and vocal lessons - sometimes spending 12 hour days in the studio.

After the girls showcase in November 1994, they realised they were unhappy with their current management - they gave the girls songs to sing, wanted them to dress and dance in certain ways - so in early 1995, they left Heart Management and went out on their own finding co-writers to write with - and eventually a manager in Simon Fuller - who got them their record deal with Virgin.

The girls really put "Girl Power" to the test when they fired their manager Simon Fuller in November.

1998 - Spiceworld Tour, Geri's Departure & Goodbye

The girls seventh single "Stop" was released on March 9, 1998 - and broke the girls run of UK #1 singles by "stopping" at #2. Their eighth single "Viva Forever" was released on July 20, 1998 and returned to the girls to the top of the UK charts. Their ninth single "Goodbye" was released on December 14, 1998 and reached #1 in the UK - making it the girls third consecutive Christmas #1 - a feat only matched by The Beatles. 1998 was a year of ups and downs for the girls - they kicked off their first world tour - The Spiceworld Tour - on February 24 in Dublin and it was a massive success - the girls played to over 1,000,000 people during the entire run of the Spiceworld Tour which had stops all over Europe, the US and Canada. However, the tour took it's toll with the girls becoming tired and losing some of their spark. This culminated in Geri leaving the band on May 31, 1998 - having missed the girls gigs in Oslo, Norway. The girls soldiered on though appearing with Pavarotti at his War Child concert in June before kicking of the US leg of the Spiceworld Tour in Miami, Florida. In August 1998, it was revealled the Victoria & Melanie B were both pregnant and, after returning home from the US leg of the Tour Melanie B married Jimmy Gulzar - a dancer on the tour - and the wedding was attended by the other girls [bar Geri]. Due to the girls being on tour their TV appearances were largely scaled down - only performing on Top Of The Pops to promote Stop - and usually just doing a press conference on the day of their concert in each city. They did however manage some big TV appearances - The Oprah Winfrey Show. The Late Show With David Letterman [twice!] and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in the US, A Hit Machine special in France and Intimate & Interactive in Canada. They promoted "Viva Forever" & "Goodbye" on Live & Kicking - and also promoted Goodbye on The National Lottery, The Pepsi Chart & Children In Need before Melanie C & Emma promoted in Germany, Denmark, France & the US. The girls also paid a fleeting visit to Australia in January to attend the premiere of "Spiceworld The Movie" in Sydney. Magazine covers slowed down alot in 1998, but the girls did manage to grace the cover of Vogue in the US! The girls also featured on the official World Cup Song "How Does It Feel To Be On Top Of The World" Apart from their music releases girls released two Home Videos [Spiceworld: The Movie & Spice Girls VS Wembley Stadium]

1999 - Hiatus, Forever Spice & Christmas In Spiceworld

The girls went their seperate ways after the promotion of "Goodbye" and spent time on their own projects before reuniting to record their third album in August. They all attended Victoria's wedding to David Beckham on July 4. In September the girls recorded their vocals for the "Childrens' Promise" charity single "It's Only Rock & Roll". In November the girls launched their fourth book 'Forever Spice". December saw the girls unveil their Wax figures at Madame Taussards, before hitting the road on their "Christmas In Spiceworld" tour where they previewed three new tracks from their third album. All in all, 1999 was a slow year for the Spice Girls with Victoria & Melanie B needing time off after having their babies and the girls focusing on solo projects They also featured on the Millenium issue of Elle UK.

2000 - Forever

The girls tenth single "Holler/Let Love Lead The Way" was released on October 23, 2000 and once again the girls hit the #1 spot in the UK. The girls third album - and first without Geri - "Forever" was released on November 6, 2000 - and was the girls first album not to hit the #1 spot in the UK - peaking at #2. The album also struggled in the US with it barely cracking the top 40. Forever was a huge change of pace for the girls - with a more R & B feel - and new producers including Jam & Lewis. The girls promoted the single in the UK on The National Lottery, CD:UK, SMTV & Top Of The Pops. But elsewhere there was very little promotion and no international performances. Victoria & Emma headed to the US for a bit of promotion but it was nowhere near the kind of promotion the girls did for their first two albums. The girls peformed at the MTV Europe Music Awards and this was their last performance together until 2007. The girls did do some magazines with Q & Esquire doing features on the girls.

2001 - 2006 - Split / Hiatus

Between 2001 & 2006 it was very rare to see any of the girls together. In fact, up until early 2007 there were no photos of more than two Spice Girls. The girls concentrated on their solo careers and, even though it was never officially announced, it is widely acknowledged that the 4 remaining Spice Girls had a meeting in early 2001 and decided not to release any more singles from "Forever" and to concentrate on their solo careers - basically to disband the group. There were sightings of a couple of the girls together - Emma & Melanie B at Melanie's book signing in 2002, Emma & Melanie C on Top Of The Pops together in 2003. However, at the beginning of 2003, all 5 of the girls got together for the first time since Geri left at Victoria's home for a dinner. Although it was speculated that a reunion was in the works, it proved to be untrue and every now and then we'd continue seeing a couple of the girls together. In 2004, four of the girls got together when Victoria christened her sons Brooklyn & Romeo. Geri, Melanie C & Emma attended the event. In 2005 & 2006 Geri was spotted with Victoria & Emma on multiple occassions All the while, rumours where constant about a Spice Girls reunion.

2007 - 2008 - Reunion & Return Of The Spice Girls

In February 2007, for the first time since 2000, three Spice Girls were spotted together when Geri, Victoria & Emma went out to dinner together. This was followed up in April with the Christening of Geri's daughter Bluebell, which 4 of the girls attended [Geri, Victoria, Emma & Melanie C] and were photographed together. The story goes that this event was the catalyst for the reunion the world had been waiting for, and finally, after nine years, on June 28, 2007 - all five Spice Girls were reunited at a press conference to announce the Return Of The Spice Girls tour and Greatest Hits album. Before the tour commenced though, the girls performed at the Victoria's Secrets show on November 15, 2007 and on the Children In Need show on November 16, 2007. The Greatest Hits album was released on November 12, 2007 - peaking at #2 in the UK and #1 in Australia - followed by the girls eleventh single Headlines [Friendship Never Ends] on November 19, 2007 which peaked at #11 in the UK. The Return Of The Spice Girls tour kicked off in Vancouver, Canada on December 2, 2007 & ended in Toronto, Canada on February 28, 2008. The girls had announced shows in Beijing, Sydney, Argentina and Rio but had never confirmed these dates and no tickets ever went on sale. However, many believe the tour ended early. The reunion tour reignited the girls friendship and ever since the girls have been spotted together in varying combinations including at the Captial FM Awards, Glamour Awards & Pride Of Britain Awards in 2008.

2009 - 2011 - Reunion Rumours & Brit Awards

After the Return Of The Spice Girls Tour, the girls were often spotted together in different combinations and in 2009, rumours started brewing of a Spice Girls musical. In 2010, Geri & Melanie B attended the Brit Awards and picked up the girls award for "Best Peformance Of The Past 25 Years" for the girls appearance on the 1997 show. Almost as soon as the Return Of The Spice Girls Tour ended, rumours began of another reunion and this continued until 2012.

2012 - 2013 - Viva Forever Musical & Olympics Performance

On June 26, 2012, all five Spice Girls reunited publically for the first time in over four years for the official announcement of "Viva Forever" - a Musical based on the girls songs. Written by Jennifer Saunders and produced by Judy Kramer it was announced the musical would launch in December 2012. In July, rumours started circulating that the girls would peform at the Opening Ceremony for the London Olympics. When this passed and with no confirmation from the girls, rumours circulated that the girls would perform at the Closing Ceremony. A week before, all five girls were spotted rehearsing their routine, and finally, on August 12, 2012, the worst kept secret was revealled and the girls hit the stage at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. Performing a mash up of Wannabe & Spice Up Your Life, the girls were a hit - their performance was the most tweeted about event across the entire Olympics - and most fans - and the girls themselves - view this as their career highlight. After the Olympics, the girls went their separate way again, but were still spotted together now and then in different combinations - and in November, Geri, Emma & Melanie C promoted "Viva Forever" with a photoshoot for "Weekend" magazine and an appearance on "Alan Carr: Chatty Man". Emma & Melanie C also released their duet "I Know Him So Well" on November 11, 2012. On December 11, 2012, all five girls reunited again for the premiere of "Viva Forever The Musical" - however, it wasn't quite the reunion that everybody hoped for - Victoria didn't arrive with the other girls, she didn't walk the red carpet with the other girls, and she didn't sit with the other girls at the show or the after party [which she left early]. This put a dampner of the event and to date is the last event where all five Spice Girls were together. It did however start rumours of a four piece reunion without Victoria. In 2013, the girls [minus Victoria] attended a cocktail lunch at Harvey Nicols to promote Viva Forever, but after 7 months, the show closed in June. Also in 2013, Victoria announced she would no longer be performing and would concentrate on her fashion career.

2014 - Present - Persistant Reunion Rumours

Since 2014, their have been persistant rumours of a Spice Girls reunion - both with Victoria and without. Towards the end of 2015 and into 2016 the focus has been on the girls 20th anniversary and plans to tour. With both Geri & Melanie B saying there have been talks but "nothing's confirmed", and that any reunion most likely won't include Victoria, fans are waiting the announcement of a tour or any reunion plans. Meanwhile the girls are still regularly spotted together in different combinations [four of the girls attended both Victoria's 40th birthday party and David's 40th birthday party as well as private meetings and going out to dinners] and often share snaps on social media of their meetings. For now all fans can do is just wait!
